Future’s Gate

Gossamer veil edged in fleur-de-lis lace

Frames dawn’s radiance in your face.

Lustrous white satin, pumps and seed pearls;

June metamorphosis: woman from girl.

Old blends with new for this timeless act,

Sanctioned by God plus a marriage contract.

The trousseau is packed, the aisle now awaits:

Indelible path to future’s gate.

The dance of our species: our futures converge

From lullaby, two-step, to funeral dirge.

The score of our two-step’s an opus composed

Of lyrical harmony and, juxtaposed,

Strife’s syncopation. Prosperous years

Have only a prelude with tandem careers;

To parry life’s passages, strife, and time’s whim,

Include in full measure love’s jubilant hymn.
